A Reign Rooted in Heritage
King Buyelekhaya Zwelibanzi Dalindyebo ascended to the throne of the AbaThembu nation in May 1989, succeeding his father, King Sabata Jonguhlanga Dalindyebo. He carries the royal praise name “Aa! Zwelibanzi!”, a title that speaks to the breadth and reach of his authority across Thembuland.
As reigning monarch of the Great House — Eastern Thembu, seated at Bumbane Great Palace near Mthatha — the King stands at the head of a royal lineage that traces directly back through Ngangelizwe, Ngubengcuka (Vusani), Ndaba, Zondwa, Tato, Madiba and Hala, to the founding Thembu ancestors who settled at Dedesi in the 16th century.
The AbaThembu monarchy has long balanced tradition with the responsibilities of modern nationhood — presiding over customary law, royal ceremony, and the wellbeing of AbaThembu communities across the Eastern Cape and beyond, while working alongside the Royal Council and Chiefs to guide the nation forward.
The Royal Houses
The Thembu monarchy is organised around two great seats: the Great House — Eastern Thembu, at Bumbane Great Palace in Mthatha — and the Right Hand House — Western Thembu, at Qamata Great Palace in Cofimvaba. Together they uphold the customs, governance and continuity of the AbaThembu royal succession.
